Video: Rice Bowl to Ashtray – Documentary on industrialisation and displacement in Chhattisgarh


Since its formation Chhattisgarh has become the new destination of domestic and foreign investment. Sunil Kumar’s award-winning documentary Daan Se Raakh (Rice Bowl to Ashtray) captures  displacement and industrialization in Chhattisgarh. It critically investigates the impact of unbridled industrialization, privatization of water, and acquisition of agricultural land on the life and livelihoods of the rural population.

Sunil Kumar, an independent filmmaker, has recently made a documentary on displacement and industrialization in Korba and Janjgir-Champa (Chhattisgarh). The documentary, ‘Rice Bowl to Ashtray’, was screened and got an award at the Vibgyor film festival.

Synopsis:

Since its formation Chhattisgarh has become the new destination of domestic and foreign investment. The documentary critically investigates the impact of unbridled industrialization, privatization of water, acquisition of agricultural land on the life and livelihood of rural population.

It is based in Janjgir-Champa and Korba districts of Chhattisgarh. While Korba has already sacrificed its land, water, crop and fresh air to become the hub of thermal power production, Janjgir-Champa, ‘rice bowl of Chhattisgarh’, wait for its turn. Alienated from land and livelihood and dwindling savings from meager compensation, for laboring poor, dream of development has turned into a long nightmare.
