Carbon and Energy Footprinting Workshop
| Event Start Date: 20th October 2019 | Event End Date: 20th October 2019 | Event Venue: Hyderabad |
Importance of C&E Footprinting
Since the industrial revolution began three centuries ago, humans have used 40% of the known 50 ZJ of fossil fuel reserves. Fossil fuels will exhaust well within this century (a phenomenon known as peak oil), and over 80 non-renewable ores will deplete drastically. No alternate energy source that can replace fossil fuels is in sight.
The use of such large quantities of fossil fuels has pumped >2,000 GtCO2 into the atmosphere and has caused a global average temperature rise of 1oC over pre-industrial times. To avoid runaway temperature rise feedforward mechanisms that global warming is capable of kicking in, the 2015 inter-government Paris Agreement desires that we limit temperature rise to <1.5-2oC. Accordingly, countries made non-binding pledges to control their emissions. But even if these pledges are fully implemented, temperature rise by 2100 is expected to be 3-4oC. This warming will have catastrophic impacts on the environment and human society.
Human society is in a truly unsustainable mode. The root cause of climate change lies in our unending quest for growth. There is an urgent need to reduce global energy consumption and carbon emissions, for which we must also become a more equitable society. An important first step to move in this direction is to learn how to compute and understand our personal carbon and energy footprints. This can be subsequently followed by doing the same thing for organizations and nations.
