While staying in the US, Aparajita and Debal became interested in the issues of food toxicity, biodiversity and seed rights. Upon returning from the US in 2011, they visited various sustainable farming initiatives in India, and started a small Community Supported Agriculture Farm (Smell of the Earth) on borrowed land near Kolkata with the hopes of spreading awareness about local and chemical-free food systems. They moved out of the city in 2014 to set up a 2-acre ecological family farm with natural dwellings from ground up near Santiniketan, where they live permanently with their daughter, work as farmers, and connect with the surrounding community to spread the message of ecological lifestyles. Their farm has no permanent employees, and is not funded externally. Aparajita and Debal are both certified Permaculture Designers. Debal has also designed the natural buildings on the farm.
