The story of development and social change in India has a complex history influenced by colonisation, the freedom movement, national planning, and liberalisation and globalisation which penetrated almost all spheres of social life. Its impact has been hugely different for various class, caste, gender, and ethnic-religious groups. And, in response, the search for a just, equitable and tolerant society has moved from purely economic to social and now to socio-ecological approaches.
A course on development and social change is usually available only for students pursuing higher education. Organisations working in the various areas of development too need to have a broad understanding of this story. This short course specially designed for the development organisations intends to provide a comprehensive overview of the history, present and future direction of this complex story.
This course offers a broad overview of the key changes in society, economy, politics and ecology that brought us to where we are today in the country. The course further deals with the key theoretical and conceptual frameworks which shaped and critiqued this journey, and finally highlights the new approaches and possibilities emerging in development interventions across the world. The course is intended to encourage organisations to reflect on their premises, orientations, and actions.
