Conference on alternative politics

Event Start Date:

Event End Date:
10th July 2016
Event Venue:
Dharwad, Karnataka

The National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR) will host ‘Whither India and Karnataka’, a two-day conference at the Karnatak Vidyavardhak Sangha (KVS) here, from July 9.

NCPNR founder president S.R. Hiremath told presspersons here on Saturday that the conference would focus on finding out alternatives to the existing political situation in Karnataka; solutions to the agrarian crisis; a holistic development approach; and strengthening democracy with people’s participation.

Senior counsel Basavaprabhu Hosakeri has been chosen as the convener of the conference. Other key-persons who would attend the conference include Prashanth Bhushan, senior advocate in the Supreme Court. Veteran journalist Patil Puttappa, academic-activist Yogendra Yadav and the former member of the Planning Commission S.P. Shukla would address the inaugural session. Litterateur Devanoor Mahadeva would be a special invitee.

The recent incident of “cash for vote” during the Rajya Sabha elections had exposed the “true face” of politicians who were selling their votes for cash, Mr. Hiremath alleged.

“Today, democracy is thriving only in the hands of money and this is taking the society on a negative path. It appears that the 2018 election is heading in the same direction as the 2013 election. Then, the voters had taught the BJP a lesson as it had looted the State recklessly and now, the people are dejected with the dismal performance of the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.

Hence, Congress is not an alternative to the BJP nor the BJP is an alternative to the Congress.

The conference will throw light on other political alternatives,” Mr. Hiremath added.
