One of the earliest and perennially relevant critics of the industrial economic system. A pioneer of rural economic development. The guiding light for Gandhi’s economic and environmental philosophy. J.C. Kumarappa was all this and more – yet this visionary thinker and giant of alternative economic thought remains largely forgotten today. Mark Lindley, author of J.C. Kumarappa: Mahatma Gandhi’s Economist, will talk about Kumarappa’s abiding relevance for the 21st century world, where reckless economic growth is causing widespread social upheaval and ecological devastation.

About J.C. Kumarappa
A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, Kumarappa is credited for developing the school of economic thought called “Gandhian economics”. Kumarappa worked to combine Gandhian values of “trusteeship”, non-violence and a focus on human dignity and development in place of materialism as the basis of his economic theories. He helped found and organise the All India Village Industries Association in 1935; and was imprisoned for more than a year during the Quit India movement. After India’s independence in 1947, Kumarappa worked for the Planning Commission of India and the Indian National Congress to develop national policies for agriculture and rural development. The Historian Ramachandra Guha calls Kumarappa, “The Green Gandhian,” portraying him as the founder of modern environmentalism in India.
