An introductory course to plants at Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary

Consider this course a quick tour through the amazing world of plants. GBS is home to more than 1600 native species, as well as hundreds of unusual exotics, You will meet water wheels, bat flowers and buttressed giant trees; pitcher plants, bromeliads and cobra lilies; ferns, begonias, mosses, impatiens and orchids. This is a unique chance to learn about all the main groups of land plants, from the earliest mosses to the more recent grasses.There are also birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians and mammals here, this botanical sanctuary is a zoological sanctuary too!

- Identification skills: learning to use floras, field guides and botanical keys
- Evolutionary exploration of the main plant groups: bryophytes (mosses, liverworts); pteridophytes (ferns, fern allies), gymnosperms, and angiosperms (flowering plants)
- Distinguishing characters of the main flowering plant families.
- Patterns in plant ecology: observations of populations, life-forms, communities and habitats
- Plant conservation practices through horticulture
- Observations of plant-insect interactions
