We also recommend this experience for children, who are naturally curious, as it encourages holistic growth and a closeness to nature from a young age.

About Vanvadi

Nestling in the foothills of the Sahyadris between Mumbai and Pune, Vanvadi is a lush, 24 year old, collectively regenerated forest of 65 acres on gently undulating land. Rich in biodiversity, it has had heartening success too in rainwater harvesting, with brimming water bodies and seasonal streams flowing from mid-June to end November. Organic farming is done on about 1.5 acres around the community house. Vanvadi is a strictly ‘Rubbish-free Zone’. (Any plastics/packaging or city litter brought by anyone should be carried back by them.) The food is simple, vegetarian, and the accommodation is shared. There is no electricity, and network is poor.

Directions to Vanvadi

The nearest railway station is Neral (of Matheran fame), 9-10 km from Vanvadi. Neral is on the Central Railway, and all the Karjat bound local (suburban) trains from Mumbai stop here. At Neral station, exit from the extreme rear end of the platform (closer to Mumbai), and walk 5 minutes towards the Neral bus stand. Just before you reach Neral bus stand, you will find the parking lot for the auto-drivers from Devpada village, who all know Vanvadi well, and would charge Rs 250 for hiring the entire (large) auto to bring you right into our Vanvadi forest, close to our community house. (Vanvadi is about 3 km beyond Devpada village.)

In case you are driving from Mumbai, head towards Karjat. Just before entering Karjat town, turn left over the Ulhas river bridge and drive about 18 km towards Kashele. Then drive another 9 km further towards Vare village. Just before Vare village, there is a Vada Pav stall, where you should turn left and drive another 1.5 km to reach Vanvadi. The first small grill gate leads to a walking trail, but if you drive about 150 metres beyond it, there is another motorable entry right into the Vanvadi land, bringing you very close to the community house.
