New Guide and Webinar:
How Paralegals Can Advance Environmental Justice
We are delighted to share a new practice guide: Paralegals for Environmental Justice. Learn more about the guide at a webinar on Wednesday, February 7th.
In large parts of the world, the environmental impacts of development have created a crisis. Plantations, mines, and other industrial projects are causing profound harm to land, livelihoods, and public health.
Many countries have decent environmental laws on paper, but non-compliance by governments and corporations is often the norm.
This new Practice Guide for Environment Justice Paralegals is a step in the direction of closing this environmental enforcement gap.
The guide provides a methodology for community mobilizers, activists and citizen groups to pursue practical redress from environmental institutions.
The guide is based on four years of work by paralegals in India. The paralegals have assisted affected communities to seek legal and administrative remedies in over 150 cases of non-compliance. The guide also draws on learnings from colleagues in Africa and Asia.
Please join us for the virtual launch of the guide on February 7. We will discuss how the methodology complements the work of environmental groups, and how to pursue environmental justice in the context of current political and developmental trends.
